Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. Shaft runs in a dusty or ash-laden area — A double-lip seal with an auxiliary dust lip, and grease the cavity between lips. A single-lip seal in that duty pumps abrasive straight onto the sealing edge. Fluid is mineral oil above roughly one hundred degrees, or is synthetic — Move from nitrile to a fluoroelastomer or HNBR compound. Nitrile takes a compression set, the lip loses radial force and the leak returns within a service interval. The shaft already carries a worn groove under the old lip track — Fit a wear sleeve or reposition the seal axially so the lip runs on fresh metal. A new seal on a grooved shaft leaks from day one. Where two of those apply at once, specify for the harsher of the two — under-specifying is what puts the part back on the bench a month later. Send us the duty and we will confirm the execution.
