A soft roll intended for raw paddy wears down in a fraction of the tonnage and the roll gap needs constant resetting. Broken grain percentage is climbing while husking looks acceptable — Check roll gap and differential speed before changing rolls. Over-tight gap on a partly worn pair breaks grain faster than a worn pair set correctly. Long slender grain varieties with a thin husk — A softer roll to reduce grain pressure. The husk comes away with less crushing force and the head rice yield holds up.
