Adapter Sleeves
A slotted tapered sleeve that clamps a tapered bore bearing onto a plain shaft. Driving the bearing up the taper contracts the sleeve onto the shaft and simultaneously reduces the bearing internal clearance — the two happen together, which is why drive-up must be measured. Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. The shaft is plain, with no shoulder for the bearing to seat against — An adapter sleeve, and check that the shaft seating is within tolerance over its whole length. A worn shaft under a sleeve will let the whole assembly creep along the shaft. The bearing is large and drive-up by hook spanner is unrealistic — A hydraulic nut, or an oil injection sleeve arrangement. Sledging a hook spanner on a large sleeve gives an inconsistent drive-up and cracks the nut lugs. The bearing must retain enough clearance to run hot without preloading — A C3 or greater clearance class chosen with the drive-up in mind. Standard clearance plus a full drive-up on a hot shaft leaves nothing, and it will run hot from the first hour. Where two of those apply at once, specify for the harsher of the two — under-specifying is what puts the part back on the bench a month later. Send us the duty and we will confirm the execution.

Measure the radial internal clearance with feeler gauges before you start and again as you drive up, working at the top of the bearing with the unloaded roller. Counting nut flats is not a measurement — the same number of flats gives a different clearance on every shaft.
