Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. The joint must resist axial float in both directions — Two bearings opposed and clamped together. One on its own floats the instant the load reverses. Axial load is the larger of the two components — The angular contact form rather than a radial spherical bearing. A radial type loaded axially rides on the ring edge and picks up. The assembly has to be set to a defined internal clearance — Shim the opposed pair to the figure. Clamping all clearance out of a plain joint squeezes away the grease film it depends on. Grease these until clean grease shows at both seals, then move the joint and grease again. Half a stroke of the gun into a vertical king pin only fills the space above the sphere while the loaded face stays dry.
