Axle Seals

Lip seals fitted at the inboard end of the hub to keep axle oil or hub grease off the brakes. They run on the spindle or on a slinger pressed to it, and they take every bit of water thrown up by the tyre ahead. SES holds the range as an authorised SKF distributor, covering shaft sizes Roughly 30 mm to 200 mm; lip materials NBR, HNBR, FKM; outside diameter Metal case or rubber covered; spring Stainless garter spring on the main lip. Executions include single lip with dust lip, rubber-covered outside diameter, seals with integral slinger, heavy duty truck axle executions, among others. It is specified most often into rear drive axles on tippers and multi-axle trucks and trailer and semi-trailer axle ends. Every part is genuine SKF through official channels, with designation, specification and options confirmed against your duty before it ships — supplied from Kolkata and our branch network, with breakdown cover that does not sit in an inbox.

Where it runs.

You will find Axle Seals in the parts of a plant where this particular duty actually occurs. In practice that means rear drive axles on tippers and multi-axle trucks, trailer and semi-trailer axle ends, tractor final drives on estate and agro duty, and equally dumper and articulated hauler axles, light commercial vehicle rear axle shafts, bus rear axles on continuous city routes. What links them is the duty rather than the machine name — position: Inboard face of the wheel hub. If your installation is not on that list it matters less than you would think: the operating condition decides the specification. Send us the load, the speed, the running temperature and the environment it runs in, and we will match it to the right execution in the SKF range and confirm what is in stock.

Specify it against the duty.

Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. Hub bore has been damaged or is corroded at the seal seat — A rubber-covered outside diameter version. A metal-cased seal in a pitted bore leaks around the case, and fitters chase the lip for weeks looking for the cause. Axle oil is a heavy EP grade running hot in low gears — An HNBR or FKM lip. Standard nitrile hardens against hot EP oils and the lip loses its follow-up on the spindle. Brake linings on one side keep coming back oil-soaked — A seal with a secondary dust lip and check the axle breather at the same time; a blocked breather pressurises the case and no lip will hold against it. Where two of those apply at once, specify for the harsher of the two — under-specifying is what puts the part back on the bench a month later. Send us the duty and we will confirm the execution.

Ordering this from SES.

Drive the seal in with a flat mandrel that bears on the outer case only, square to the bore. A seal tapped in on the lip side goes in cocked, and a cocked seal runs an oval track on the spindle that the next seal inherits.
