Backing Bearings
Heavy duty bearing assemblies that support the back-up rolls in cluster mills. They run at high load with continuous rolling contact against the roll body, so the outer ring surface itself is a working raceway. SES holds the range as an authorised SKF distributor, covering type Multi-row cylindrical roller assemblies, cage or full complement; outer ring Hardened and ground to run directly against the roll; sizes Set by the mill make, model and stand position; lubrication Grease or oil-air, per the mill design. Executions include cage guided multi-row executions, full complement executions for maximum load, sealed executions for emulsion service, executions with a crowned outer ring profile, among others. It is specified most often into cluster mill saddle assemblies in cold rolling and multi-roll stands rolling stainless and silicon steel. Every part is genuine SKF through official channels, with designation, specification and options confirmed against your duty before it ships — supplied from Kolkata and our branch network, with breakdown cover that does not sit in an inbox.

Where it runs.
You will find Backing Bearings in the parts of a plant where this particular duty actually occurs. In practice that means cluster mill saddle assemblies in cold rolling, multi-roll stands rolling stainless and silicon steel, non-ferrous strip mills rolling copper and aluminium, and equally foil mills and precision thickness lines, reversing cold mills on thin gauge product, skin pass and temper mill back-up positions. What links them is the duty rather than the machine name — load: Very heavy radial, continuous. If your installation is not on that list it matters less than you would think: the operating condition decides the specification. Send us the load, the speed, the running temperature and the environment it runs in, and we will match it to the right execution in the SKF range and confirm what is in stock.
Specify it against the duty.
Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. You are replacing a set and the mill is out of production — A complete matched set for the stand, not individual bearings. Mixing new and part-worn backing bearings across a saddle changes the roll deflection and the strip profile with it. Outer ring surfaces show flaking or a repeating mark across the strip — Replacement rather than regrinding in the shop. The outer ring is a raceway as well as a running surface, and skimming it removes the hardened case. Coolant and emulsion carry fine metallic fines into the saddle — The sealing arrangement specified for the mill, renewed at every set change. Fines in the rolling contact abrade the outer surface faster than the load fatigues it. Where two of those apply at once, specify for the harsher of the two — under-specifying is what puts the part back on the bench a month later. Send us the duty and we will confirm the execution.

Ordering this from SES.
Log the running hours per set and correlate them with strip surface complaints. Backing bearings rarely fail suddenly — the mill tells you first through gauge variation and surface marking, usually weeks before anything is audible at the stand.
