Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. Pure radial load with a small thrust component either way — A deep groove ball bearing in the lightest series the shaft allows. Oversizing wastes shaft space and lowers the load per ball below the minimum needed to keep the balls rolling. Thrust is significant and always acts in one direction — An angular contact type mounted with its thrust face against the load. A deep groove bearing pushed hard axially runs the ball track up onto the shoulder edge. Shaft and housing centre lines cannot be held parallel — A self-aligning ball bearing with its sphered outer raceway, sized for the reduced radial capacity that geometry brings.
