Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. The shaft rotates continuously at any appreciable speed — A rolling bearing. A plain bushing at speed without a pressurised film glazes and the shaft picks up material from the bush. Movement is slow oscillation under heavy load, often outdoors — A plain bearing with a maintenance-free liner. Rolling elements standing still under load in a pivot brinell the raceway at the contact points. Housing bores cannot be machined in line with each other — A self-aligning type from the outset. Forcing a rigid bearing into a misaligned bore loads one edge of the raceway and the track shows a diagonal wear band.
