In practice that means bucket elevator drive chains in cement plants, drag and apron conveyors beneath crushers, kiln girth gear auxiliary drives, and equally rice and oil mill transmission drives, overhead conveyor lines in paint shops, packaging machine indexing drives. Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. Chain runs wet or gets hosed down at every shift change — Nickel-plated or stainless chain. Plain carbon chain rusts inside the bush clearance and a seized link tears the sprocket teeth. Slow, long, heavily loaded conveyor run — Solid-bush or sealed-joint chain. Standard bushed chain draws dust into the pin joint and elongates quickly. Chain speed is beyond the manual lubrication limit — An oil bath or stream feed inside a sealed casing. Drip-fed fast chains run dry between drops and pick up on the pins.
