In practice that means motor to gearbox on conveyor drive heads, pump sets in refinery utilities, fan drives on kiln exhaust systems, and equally mill main drives with high starting torque, diesel generator sets, compressor trains in air plants. Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. Torsional pulsing from a reciprocating engine or compressor — An elastomeric element that damps the pulse. A metallic disc coupling passes it straight through into the crankshaft or gear teeth. Machines cannot be drawn apart to change the element — A spacer or split-element coupling. Without it, a ten-minute element change becomes a pump strip-down. High ambient heat close to a furnace or dryer — Steel grid or gear elements. Rubber tyres and jaw spiders harden and crumble above their temperature limit. Align cold, then check again once the machine reaches operating temperature. A pump aligned perfectly at ambient can sit a few tenths of a millimetre out after the casing grows, and that is enough to chew a spider inside a month.
