Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. The thrust load is intermittent but very high, as on a screw-down — A full complement or heavy series washer set. Sizing on a duty average rather than the peak leaves indentation marks in the washers that you will feel as notchy operation. The shaft or housing seating cannot be machined truly square to the axis — A sphered housing washer with a seating ring. A skewed flat washer loads one arc of the roller set only, and that arc will spall well before the rest is even run in. Speed is above walking pace and the bearing is grease packed — A change to oil, circulating if possible. Grease cannot keep a film at the sliding roller-end contact, and the first sign is discoloured washers around the outer edge.
