eDrive Unit Seals

Sealing for electric drive units, where motor, reduction gearing and a coolant circuit share one housing. Work through this group by position: rotor shaft seals, gearbox output seals, and the low friction executions fitted where drag costs vehicle range. SES holds the range as an authorised SKF distributor, covering shaft sizes Roughly 20 mm to 120 mm on current units; materials PTFE compounds, FKM, ACM; surface speed High speed executions run above 30 m/s; temperature Sustained gear oil temperatures to about 150 °C. Executions include rotor shaft seals, gearbox output shaft seals, low friction seals for eDrive, coolant circuit seals, among others. It is specified most often into traction drive units in electric buses and trucks and electric light commercial vehicle rear drive modules. Every part is genuine SKF through official channels, with designation, specification and options confirmed against your duty before it ships — supplied from Kolkata and our branch network, with breakdown cover that does not sit in an inbox.

Where it runs.

You will find eDrive Unit Seals in the parts of a plant where this particular duty actually occurs. In practice that means traction drive units in electric buses and trucks, electric light commercial vehicle rear drive modules, battery forklifts and warehouse tow tractors, and equally battery-electric underground loaders and haulers, drive unit endurance and run-in test rigs, fleet workshops maintaining electric plant vehicles. What links them is the duty rather than the machine name — duty: High shaft speed, low drag torque. If your installation is not on that list it matters less than you would think: the operating condition decides the specification. Send us the load, the speed, the running temperature and the environment it runs in, and we will match it to the right execution in the SKF range and confirm what is in stock.

Specify it against the duty.

Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. Seal runs directly on a rotor shaft at motor speed — A PTFE lip execution. Elastomer lips glaze at those surface speeds, then harden, and the leak appears as a film on the stator housing. Bearings in the unit show fluting from stray shaft current — A current-diverting element beside the seal. A plain seal insulates the shaft, so the current finds its path through a bearing raceway instead. Gear oil and coolant are separated by a single wall — A back-to-back pair with a vented space between. One lip failing then shows outside as a weep rather than emulsifying the gear oil unseen. Where two of those apply at once, specify for the harsher of the two — under-specifying is what puts the part back on the bench a month later. Send us the duty and we will confirm the execution.

Ordering this from SES.

Ask for the counterface finish and hardness when you raise the order. Drive unit shafts are often lighter and softer than the driveline shafts your fitters are used to, and a hard PTFE lip will groove them within a season.
