You will find End Covers in the parts of a plant where this particular duty actually occurs. In practice that means conveyor pulley shaft ends inside dusty transfer houses, fan shaft outboard bearings in dryer and kiln areas, food and beverage line shaft ends needing a hygienic close-off, and equally agricultural machine shaft ends exposed to chaff and spray, line shaft outboard positions where the shaft stub protrudes. What links them is the duty rather than the machine name — purpose: Blanks off the non-shaft side of the housing. Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. The unit sits where material can settle on top of the housing — Fit the fully closed cover. Leaving the housing open on the blind side gives fine dust a direct route into the grease, and the bearing loses years of life for the cost of a pressed cap. Shaft protrudes past the bearing but does not drive anything — Use the open cover with a lip seal rather than cutting the shaft flush. Cutting the shaft removes the option of pulling the pulley off against a stop later. The application is washdown and the cover must not trap water — Choose the stainless or moulded cover designed to shed water. A pressed steel cap holds a puddle against the housing face and rust creeps under the fit until the cover falls off.
