Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. Shaft ends flush inside the unit with nothing projecting — A blind end cover. Leaving that bore open is the commonest way water and dust get past an otherwise sound seal. Shaft passes through and continues beyond the unit — A through cover with its own lip, sized to the shaft and not to the housing bore. A cover rubbing the shaft heats the lip until it hardens and cracks. Unit is purge-greased through the seal — A cover with a relief path so old grease can escape. A fully closed cover pressurises the cavity and pushes grease past the inboard seal into the machine.
