Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. Sour service with hydrogen sulphide present — Elastomers and metal parts qualified to the relevant sour service standard. An unqualified compound hardens and cracks, and the metal parts can fail brittle. System is depressurised quickly from high gas pressure — A rapid gas decompression resistant compound. Gas dissolved in the elastomer expands on release and splits the seal from the inside out. Both rotation and reciprocation occur at the same stem — A seal designed for combined motion. Elements optimised for one motion wear a groove that the other motion then leaks through.
