Four-point Contact Ball Bearings

A split inner ring holds the balls against gothic-arch raceways, so each ball touches at four points and carries thrust equally in either direction. The bearing is a pure thrust component and is fitted alongside a radial bearing that takes all the radial load. SES holds the range as an authorised SKF distributor, covering bore range About 15 mm to 700 mm; contact angle Around 35 degrees; inner ring Two-piece, split radially; cage Machined brass on most sizes. Executions include QJ2 series, narrow section, QJ3 series, heavier section, machined brass cage execution, large bore executions for gear units. It is specified most often into gearbox locating positions beside a cylindrical roller bearing and marine and industrial reduction gear thrust take-up. Every part is genuine SKF through official channels, with designation, specification and options confirmed against your duty before it ships — supplied from Kolkata and our branch network, with breakdown cover that does not sit in an inbox.

You will find Four-point Contact Ball Bearings in the parts of a plant where this particular duty actually occurs. In practice that means gearbox locating positions beside a cylindrical roller bearing, marine and industrial reduction gear thrust take-up, vertical pump and turbine shaft location, and equally compressor and blower shaft thrust positions, winch and hoist gearbox output shafts, mill drive gear units in cement and mineral plants. What links them is the duty rather than the machine name — load: Pure axial, both directions. If your installation is not on that list it matters less than you would think: the operating condition decides the specification. Send us the load, the speed, the running temperature and the environment it runs in, and we will match it to the right execution in the SKF range and confirm what is in stock.

Specify it against the duty.

Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. A cylindrical roller bearing carries the radial load and thrust needs locating — A four-point bearing set in a housing bore with clearance on the outside diameter, so it never picks up any radial share. Thrust reverses regularly under running load — This type rather than an opposed angular contact pair, because both directions run on the same ball set with identical capacity. Available axial length is short but thrust is high — The four-point design, whose two contact arcs per raceway give thrust capacity in a narrow section. Where two of those apply at once, specify for the harsher of the two — under-specifying is what puts the part back on the bench a month later. Send us the duty and we will confirm the execution.

Ordering this from SES.

Never let a four-point contact bearing take radial load. It has to float in the housing bore and carry thrust only, otherwise the balls run on both raceway arcs at once and the split ring cracks at the joint.
