Heat past the seal material limit and the lip hardens, so the bearing arrives on the shaft with its protection already gone. Bearings mounted regularly across a range of sizes — An induction heater with interchangeable yokes and a temperature probe, rather than a hot plate. Plate heating gives an uneven ring temperature and the bore is undersized on the cool side. Fitting has to be done on the machine with limited access — A portable induction heater or heating rings sized for the bearing. The window between free fit and grip is short, so the heater must be at the shaft, not in the workshop. Confirm the heater has demagnetised the bearing before it goes onto the shaft. A residually magnetised ring collects every steel particle in the housing, and the wear debris it holds against the raceway will shorten the life of an otherwise perfect fit.
