Hybrid Ceramic Bearings
Steel rings running silicon nitride rolling elements. The ceramic balls are lighter, harder and non-conductive, so the bearing breaks the circuit for shaft currents and tolerates speeds and marginal lubrication that punish an all-steel bearing. SES holds the range as an authorised SKF distributor, covering ball material Silicon nitride, Si3N4; density Roughly 40 per cent of bearing steel; electrical Insulating rolling elements, no coating to chip; types available Deep groove ball, angular contact ball, cylindrical roller. Executions include hybrid deep groove ball bearings, hybrid angular contact ball bearings, hybrid cylindrical roller bearings, sealed hybrid deep groove ball bearings, among others. It is specified most often into inverter-driven motors above about 100 kW in mill and pump houses and machine tool spindles in tool rooms and workshops. Every part is genuine SKF through official channels, with designation, specification and options confirmed against your duty before it ships — supplied from Kolkata and our branch network, with breakdown cover that does not sit in an inbox.

Where it runs.
You will find Hybrid Ceramic Bearings in the parts of a plant where this particular duty actually occurs. In practice that means inverter-driven motors above about 100 kW in mill and pump houses, machine tool spindles in tool rooms and workshops, turbo blowers and vacuum pumps on process lines, and equally vertical motor upper guide positions on cooling water pumps, test rigs and dynamometers in maintenance workshops, generator non-drive end positions on captive power sets. What links them is the duty rather than the machine name — rolling elements: Silicon nitride, electrically insulating. If your installation is not on that list it matters less than you would think: the operating condition decides the specification. Send us the load, the speed, the running temperature and the environment it runs in, and we will match it to the right execution in the SKF range and confirm what is in stock.
Specify it against the duty.
Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. Motor shows classic fluting: washboard marks on the raceway and a growl that returns after every regrease — Fit hybrid at the non-drive end at minimum. Ceramic elements interrupt the current path, but leave a bonded earth strap on the shaft or the current simply finds the driven machine instead. Spindle runs at a speed where cage and ball inertia matter — Take the higher limiting speed of the hybrid version but keep the original preload class. Carrying over a heavy preload from a steel set removes the thermal margin the ceramic just bought you. Duty involves brief starvation of oil or grease at start-up — Hybrid tolerates the metal-on-ceramic contact far better than steel on steel, which micro-welds and smears. It is not a licence to under-lubricate in service. Where two of those apply at once, specify for the harsher of the two — under-specifying is what puts the part back on the bench a month later. Send us the duty and we will confirm the execution.

Ceramic balls are hard but brittle at the point of impact. A bearing dropped on a concrete floor can carry an invisible ring crack that opens under load weeks later, so scrap anything that has been dropped rather than fitting it because it looks fine.
