Large Diameter Seals
Where a shaft or housing is too big for moulded tooling, the seal is turned to size instead. These cover the metre-and-above diameters found on mill stands, kilns, turbines and heavy gearboxes. SES holds the range as an authorised SKF distributor, covering diameter reach From a few hundred millimetres to well over one metre; execution Endless or split with bonded or interlocking joint; materials Polyurethane, PTFE compound, FKM, NBR; surface speed Suited to slow and medium peripheral speeds. Executions include endless large diameter lip seals, split execution for in-situ replacement, heavy-duty roll neck seals, water and scale exclusion profiles, among others. It is specified most often into work roll and back-up roll chock seals on a rolling mill and kiln and mill trunnion bearing housings in cement. Every part is genuine SKF through official channels, with designation, specification and options confirmed against your duty before it ships — supplied from Kolkata and our branch network, with breakdown cover that does not sit in an inbox.

Where it runs.
You will find Large Diameter Seals in the parts of a plant where this particular duty actually occurs. In practice that means work roll and back-up roll chock seals on a rolling mill, kiln and mill trunnion bearing housings in cement, turbine and generator bearing pedestals in a power station, and equally winder and calender roll ends on a paper machine, tunnel boring machine main bearing and cutterhead seals, crusher eccentric and mill pinion shaft housings. What links them is the duty rather than the machine name — diameter: Beyond moulded catalogue sizes, into metres. If your installation is not on that list it matters less than you would think: the operating condition decides the specification. Send us the load, the speed, the running temperature and the environment it runs in, and we will match it to the right execution in the SKF range and confirm what is in stock.
Specify it against the duty.
Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. The shaft cannot be lifted or the drive cannot be pulled — A split seal, supplied with a prepared joint. Site-cut solid seals leave a step at the joint that weeps for the rest of its life. Roll cooling water and scale hit the seal directly — A polyurethane lip with a heavy exclusion feature. Water carrying scale will erode a soft nitrile lip in a single campaign. Housing runs out or the shaft has measurable eccentricity — A profile with long lip travel. A short stiff lip cannot follow the runout on a large slow shaft and lifts off once per revolution. Where two of those apply at once, specify for the harsher of the two — under-specifying is what puts the part back on the bench a month later. Send us the duty and we will confirm the execution.

Ordering this from SES.
Take the diameter from the shaft with a pi tape rather than trusting the general assembly drawing. Large shafts get built up and reground over their life, and the drawing has not been right since the first repair.
