Low Friction Seals for eDrive

Shaft seals designed to hold oil back with the least possible rubbing torque. A thin PTFE sealing element carries the load instead of a spring-loaded elastomer lip, so parasitic drag and heat at the shaft both drop. SES holds the range as an authorised SKF distributor, covering sealing element PTFE compound, spring-free or lightly loaded; case Steel or composite, rubber-covered outside diameter; peripheral speed Suited to high speed drive unit shafts; temperature Wide window, from sub-zero to about 200 °C. Executions include spring-free PTFE lip, ribbed hydrodynamic lip, handed, double element with dust lip, rubber-covered outside diameter for aluminium housings, among others. It is specified most often into rotor shaft position on traction motors and output shafts of single-speed reduction gearboxes. Every part is genuine SKF through official channels, with designation, specification and options confirmed against your duty before it ships — supplied from Kolkata and our branch network, with breakdown cover that does not sit in an inbox.

Where it runs.

You will find Low Friction Seals for eDrive in the parts of a plant where this particular duty actually occurs. In practice that means rotor shaft position on traction motors, output shafts of single-speed reduction gearboxes, electric axle modules on delivery vehicles, and equally range-critical light electric commercial vehicles, efficiency mapping on drive unit test benches, retrofit of high-speed electric drives on plant equipment. What links them is the duty rather than the machine name — element: PTFE-based, low radial load. If your installation is not on that list it matters less than you would think: the operating condition decides the specification. Send us the load, the speed, the running temperature and the environment it runs in, and we will match it to the right execution in the SKF range and confirm what is in stock.

Specify it against the duty.

Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. Cold starts at low ambient with cold gear oil — A PTFE element rather than a stiff elastomer lip. A cold elastomer lip grips hard, and the first minutes of a cold start are when the shaft finish gets polished away. Shaft has any run-out or is not concentric with the bore — The execution with a flexible hinge section behind the sealing edge; a rigid low friction lip cannot follow eccentric shafts and leaks on one side of the rotation. Only a very thin oil film reaches the sealing zone — A profiled lip that generates its own hydrodynamic film. Run a low friction seal genuinely dry and the sealing edge blisters. Where two of those apply at once, specify for the harsher of the two — under-specifying is what puts the part back on the bench a month later. Send us the duty and we will confirm the execution.

Ordering this from SES.

A PTFE lip takes its final shape in the first minutes of running, so anything wrong at that moment stays wrong. Deburr the shaft lead-in and use the fitting mandrel; a scratch copied into the sealing edge never wears out again.
