You will find Lubricants in the parts of a plant where this particular duty actually occurs. In practice that means fan and blower bearings running continuously hot, electric motor bearings on mill and pump drives, conveyor pulleys exposed to rain and washdown, and equally kiln and furnace-side plummer blocks, wet end rolls in paper and pulp mills, vibrating screens and feeders in crushing plants. What links them is the duty rather than the machine name — grades: NLGI 000 to 3. If your installation is not on that list it matters less than you would think: the operating condition decides the specification. Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. Bearing runs above about 120 °C continuously — A high temperature grease with a synthetic base oil. A lithium soap grease at that temperature loses base oil rapidly and leaves a hard varnish in the raceway. Point is washed down or sits in constant water spray — A calcium sulphonate complex grease that resists washout. A grease that emulsifies looks fine on the fitting and has already lost its film in the bearing. Slow, heavily loaded shaft such as a screen or a crusher — A high viscosity base oil with EP additives; a light, fast-bearing grease has no film thickness at that speed and the raceway starts to smear. Where two of those apply at once, specify for the harsher of the two — under-specifying is what puts the part back on the bench a month later. Send us the duty and we will confirm the execution.
