Magnetic Encoders

A magnetic encoder is a seal with a magnetised elastomer ring bonded to it, giving alternating poles that a sensor reads as shaft speed and position. One component does both jobs — sealing the bearing and feeding the ABS or control system. SES holds the range as an authorised SKF distributor, covering construction Magnetised elastomer or plastic bonded to a steel seal case; output Alternating north and south poles read as pulses; sensor types Hall effect and magnetoresistive; pole count Set by the vehicle system, not interchangeable. Executions include encoder-integrated hub seals, bearing unit encoder rings, separate encoder rings for retro-fit sensing, axial and radial reading executions. It is specified most often into ABS-equipped wheel ends on trucks and light vehicles and traction control and stability systems on commercial fleets. Every part is genuine SKF through official channels, with designation, specification and options confirmed against your duty before it ships — supplied from Kolkata and our branch network, with breakdown cover that does not sit in an inbox.

Where it runs.

You will find Magnetic Encoders in the parts of a plant where this particular duty actually occurs. In practice that means ABS-equipped wheel ends on trucks and light vehicles, traction control and stability systems on commercial fleets, electric motor and drive feedback on industrial units, and equally transmission input and output speed sensing, steering and actuator position sensing, off-highway machine drive speed monitoring. What links them is the duty rather than the machine name — function: Sealing plus speed and position signal. If your installation is not on that list it matters less than you would think: the operating condition decides the specification. Send us the load, the speed, the running temperature and the environment it runs in, and we will match it to the right execution in the SKF range and confirm what is in stock.

Specify it against the duty.

Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. The dash fault reappears after a wheel bearing change — Confirm you fitted an encoder version and not the plain seal. They look nearly identical and the plain one gives no signal at all. The signal is intermittent at low speed — Check the air gap and the sensor seat. Encoder output falls off sharply with distance, and a corroded sensor boss adds exactly that distance. The vehicle works in ferrous dust from a mill or crusher — Plan periodic cleaning of the encoder face. Steel dust sticks to the magnetised ring and blurs the poles until the reading goes erratic. Where two of those apply at once, specify for the harsher of the two — under-specifying is what puts the part back on the bench a month later. Send us the duty and we will confirm the execution.

Ordering this from SES.

Keep encoder seals in their packaging until the moment of fitting and never lay them face down on a steel bench. A single pass across a magnetic parts tray is enough to leave you chasing a sensor fault that is not in the sensor.
