Magnetic Trigger Wheels
A trigger wheel carries a magnetised ring that a sensor reads for crankshaft position and speed. It is frequently combined with the crankshaft seal, so one part gives the engine both its oil seal and its timing reference. SES holds the range as an authorised SKF distributor, covering construction Magnetised elastomer or plastic on a steel carrier; integration Standalone ring or bonded to a crankshaft seal; output Alternating pole pulses with an index feature; sensors Hall effect and magnetoresistive. Executions include seal-integrated trigger wheels, standalone crankshaft trigger rings, camshaft position rings, indexed wheels with a missing-pole reference. It is specified most often into common rail diesel engines needing crank position input and generator set engines with electronic governing. Every part is genuine SKF through official channels, with designation, specification and options confirmed against your duty before it ships — supplied from Kolkata and our branch network, with breakdown cover that does not sit in an inbox.

Where it runs.
You will find Magnetic Trigger Wheels in the parts of a plant where this particular duty actually occurs. In practice that means common rail diesel engines needing crank position input, generator set engines with electronic governing, off-highway engines with emissions control systems, and equally light vehicle engine management systems, engine test and development rigs, retro-fitted engine monitoring on stationary units. What links them is the duty rather than the machine name — function: Crank position and speed reference. If your installation is not on that list it matters less than you would think: the operating condition decides the specification. Send us the load, the speed, the running temperature and the environment it runs in, and we will match it to the right execution in the SKF range and confirm what is in stock.
Specify it against the duty.
Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. The engine will not start after a front seal change — Confirm the trigger wheel version and its orientation. An engine with no crank signal cranks perfectly and never fires. There is a timing mark or index feature on the wheel — Align it exactly to the datum specified for the engine. A wheel fitted one tooth out shifts injection timing across the whole map. Steel swarf from machining is present around the front cover — Clean it away completely before assembly. Swarf clings to the magnetised ring and produces intermittent misfire codes that no scan tool explains. Where two of those apply at once, specify for the harsher of the two — under-specifying is what puts the part back on the bench a month later. Send us the duty and we will confirm the execution.

Ordering this from SES.
Photograph the old wheel in place, showing the index feature against a fixed engine reference, before you disturb anything. Once the front cover is off, nothing on the crank nose tells you where the timing datum was.
