Motor Encoder Units
A drive-end or non-drive-end motor bearing with an integral encoder, giving speed and direction feedback to a variable speed drive. The sensing sits inside the bearing envelope, so the motor keeps its standard shaft extension. SES holds the range as an authorised SKF distributor, covering bore range Common motor bearing sizes, roughly 20 mm to 80 mm; pulses Selectable counts per revolution by unit; signals Two channels in quadrature for direction; supply Low voltage DC from the drive or a separate supply. Executions include units for standard metric motor bearing sizes, units with different pulse counts per revolution, units with an integral connector, units with a flying lead cable, among others. It is specified most often into conveyor drive motors on variable speed control and fan and pump motors with closed loop speed control. Every part is genuine SKF through official channels, with designation, specification and options confirmed against your duty before it ships — supplied from Kolkata and our branch network, with breakdown cover that does not sit in an inbox.

Where it runs.
You will find Motor Encoder Units in the parts of a plant where this particular duty actually occurs. In practice that means conveyor drive motors on variable speed control, fan and pump motors with closed loop speed control, hoist and crane travel motors needing direction feedback, and equally servo motors in automated assembly and packaging, extruder and process drive motors, traction motors on industrial vehicles. What links them is the duty rather than the machine name — fits: Electric motor bearing position. If your installation is not on that list it matters less than you would think: the operating condition decides the specification. Send us the load, the speed, the running temperature and the environment it runs in, and we will match it to the right execution in the SKF range and confirm what is in stock.
Specify it against the duty.
Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. The motor design has no room for an encoder on the non-drive end — An encoder unit in place of the existing bearing. It uses the bearing space you already have, and no motor machining is involved. The drive uses closed loop vector control and needs reliable low speed feedback — A unit with a pulse count high enough for stable control at your minimum speed. Too few pulses and the drive hunts at creep speed, which shows up as belt surging. The motor runs in a hot area near a kiln, furnace or dryer — Confirm the operating temperature rating of the electronics, not just the bearing. The sensor body has a lower limit than the bearing steel around it. Where two of those apply at once, specify for the harsher of the two — under-specifying is what puts the part back on the bench a month later. Send us the duty and we will confirm the execution.

Note the pulse count and the unit reference on the motor rating plate with a punch or a durable label at the time of fitting. Two years later nobody can tell one unit from another by eye, and the drive will not run correctly on the wrong count.
