The adjoining component can be hardened and ground to raceway quality — The cage-and-needle set alone, running directly on that face. If the face cannot reach the required hardness and finish, the needles will imprint themselves into it within hours. There is no chance of controlling the finish on either adjoining part — A complete unit with both washers supplied. It is thicker, but you keep control of the raceway rather than depending on someone else's machining. The assembly is shallow and washers cannot be centred by a shoulder — A washer with a centring lip or flange. A washer that drifts off centre loads the needle ends and gives you cage wear that looks like fatigue but is not. If you plan to run the needles straight on a machined face, check the hardness with a portable tester before assembly rather than trusting the drawing. Soft faces are the single most common reason these bearings come back looking as if they were overloaded.
