Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. Drive takes shock from a jamming or surging feed — A belt drive, which slips and absorbs the spike. A chain or rigid coupling passes the whole shock straight into the gearbox teeth. Driver and driven shaft must stay in fixed phase — A synchronous belt or a chain. A V-belt creeps one to two percent under load and the timing drifts. Shafts sit close together with no room for a belt drive — A coupling, and check the parallel and angular offset the type will take before you commit to it.
