Power transmission seals — machined
This group covers the machined rotary sealing family — shaft seals and large diameter seals produced by turning rather than moulding. It exists for the sizes and materials that moulded seals do not economically reach: very large shafts, obsolete equipment, and short-notice replacements. SES holds the range as an authorised SKF distributor, covering sub-families Rotary seals, large diameter seals; materials PTFE compounds, polyurethane, NBR, FKM, thermoplastics; motion covered Rotary, oscillating, slow and high surface speed; media Mineral oil, synthetic gear oil, grease, water, process fluids. Executions include rotary seals, large diameter seals. It is specified most often into gearbox and reducer output shafts on mill and kiln drives and fan, blower and ID/FD fan shafts in power and cement plants. Every part is genuine SKF through official channels, with designation, specification and options confirmed against your duty before it ships — supplied from Kolkata and our branch network, with breakdown cover that does not sit in an inbox.

Where it runs.
You will find Power transmission seals — machined in the parts of a plant where this particular duty actually occurs. In practice that means gearbox and reducer output shafts on mill and kiln drives, fan, blower and ID/FD fan shafts in power and cement plants, pump and agitator shafts on process and effluent duty, and equally roll neck and chock sealing on rolling mills, turbine and generator bearing housings, tunnel boring, crusher and mixer main shafts. What links them is the duty rather than the machine name — covers: Rotary seals and large diameter seals. If your installation is not on that list it matters less than you would think: the operating condition decides the specification. Send us the load, the speed, the running temperature and the environment it runs in, and we will match it to the right execution in the SKF range and confirm what is in stock.
Specify it against the duty.
Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. Shaft diameter is inside the usual moulded catalogue range — The rotary machined seal. It gives the shortest route to a lip seal in a non-standard width or an unusual compound. Shaft is larger than moulded tooling covers — The large diameter seal family, which is turned to any diameter needed. Splicing several small seals into a big housing never seals properly. The machine cannot be dismantled to slide a seal on — A split execution from the large diameter family. Cutting a solid seal on site and glueing it gives you a leak path at the joint. Where two of those apply at once, specify for the harsher of the two — under-specifying is what puts the part back on the bench a month later. Send us the duty and we will confirm the execution.

Ordering this from SES.
Before you order a machined replacement, photograph the old seal in the housing and note which way the lip faced. Half of repeat rotary failures are seals that were correct but fitted the wrong way round.
