Rod Ends

A rod end is a spherical plain bearing already housed in a forged or machined head with a thread on the shank. It turns a linkage into something you can adjust for length in the field without losing the misalignment freedom at the joint. SES holds the range as an authorised SKF distributor, covering thread sizes Small instrument sizes up to heavy linkage threads; thread hand Right hand standard, left hand available; head types Male shank and female bore; bearing types Steel/steel, steel/PTFE fabric, sintered bronze. Executions include female thread rod ends, male thread rod ends, left hand thread executions, maintenance-free lined rod ends, among others. It is specified most often into damper and louvre operating linkages on boilers and ID fans and hydraulic cylinder rod connections on presses. Every part is genuine SKF through official channels, with designation, specification and options confirmed against your duty before it ships — supplied from Kolkata and our branch network, with breakdown cover that does not sit in an inbox.

Where it runs.

You will find Rod Ends in the parts of a plant where this particular duty actually occurs. In practice that means damper and louvre operating linkages on boilers and ID fans, hydraulic cylinder rod connections on presses, feeder and chute gate operating rods, and equally vibrating screen and feeder support links, steering and control linkages on plant vehicles, tensioning links on conveyor take-ups. What links them is the duty rather than the machine name — thread: Male or female, left or right hand. If your installation is not on that list it matters less than you would think: the operating condition decides the specification. Send us the load, the speed, the running temperature and the environment it runs in, and we will match it to the right execution in the SKF range and confirm what is in stock.

Specify it against the duty.

Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. Length must be adjustable with the linkage assembled — One left-hand and one right-hand rod end on the same tube, so turning the tube changes the length. Two right-hand ends mean stripping the joint every time. Load is pure tension along the rod — Size on the shank thread, not on the bearing bore. In tension the thread root gives way first, long before the sphere is anywhere near its rating. The joint is out on a structure in a dusty yard — A sealed, maintenance-free head. An open greased rod end that nobody can reach becomes a dry, oval joint inside one monsoon. Where two of those apply at once, specify for the harsher of the two — under-specifying is what puts the part back on the bench a month later. Send us the duty and we will confirm the execution.

Ordering this from SES.

Keep the rod end working in its own plane. If the linkage twists the head sideways as it swings, the load goes into the head cheeks instead of the sphere, and the head cracks at the shank before the bearing shows any wear at all.
