Housings are line-bored and the shaft is stiff — A cylindrical roller bearing, which gives the highest radial capacity per millimetre of width when alignment is genuinely good. The shaft bends measurably under load or the pedestals move — A spherical or toroidal roller type, because cylindrical rollers under angular error carry the whole load on one roller end. Radial and axial loads are both substantial — Tapered roller bearings in an opposed pair with clearance set on assembly.
