Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. A lip seal sits too deep in a stepped bore — A spacing washer behind it so the lip runs on unworn shaft. Packing the gap with shim offcuts leaves the seal square to nothing in particular. Oil weeps between a cover plate and the housing face — A rubber-bonded sealing washer under the plate rather than more jointing compound. Compound squeezed into an oil path eventually breaks off and blocks a drilling. A bearing needs a defined axial gap to a shoulder — A washer of the correct measured thickness, checked with a micrometer before assembly. Stacking two thin washers doubles the tolerance you are carrying.
