Seals for General Industrial Applications

Standard metric and inch radial shaft seals for gearboxes, motors, pumps and bearing housings. A spring-loaded elastomer lip runs on the shaft; the case holds it in the housing bore. SES holds the range as an authorised SKF distributor, covering designs HMS5 single lip, HMSA10 with auxiliary dust lip; materials NBR to +100 °C, HNBR to +150 °C, FKM to +200 °C; surface speed Up to about 14 m/s with nitrile on a ground shaft; pressure limit Around 0,05 MPa continuous. Executions include HMS5 single lip, HMSA10 with auxiliary lip, inch series designs, FKM high-temperature execution, among others. It is specified most often into worm and helical gearbox shaft ends on conveyor drives and electric motor end shields on pumps and fans. Every part is genuine SKF through official channels, with designation, specification and options confirmed against your duty before it ships — supplied from Kolkata and our branch network, with breakdown cover that does not sit in an inbox.

Where it runs.

You will find Seals for General Industrial Applications in the parts of a plant where this particular duty actually occurs. In practice that means worm and helical gearbox shaft ends on conveyor drives, electric motor end shields on pumps and fans, centrifugal pump bearing brackets, and equally machine tool spindle housings and lead screw ends, agitator and blender drive shafts in chemical plant, cooling tower fan gear drives. What links them is the duty rather than the machine name — construction: Rubber outside diameter or metal case, garter spring. If your installation is not on that list it matters less than you would think: the operating condition decides the specification. Send us the load, the speed, the running temperature and the environment it runs in, and we will match it to the right execution in the SKF range and confirm what is in stock.

Specify it against the duty.

Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. Housing bore is aluminium or another light alloy — A rubber outside diameter execution. A steel case in an alloy bore loosens as the housing grows with temperature and starts to weep at the outside diameter. There is a slight vacuum or pressure difference across the seal — Check that the sump breather is clear before blaming the seal. Standard lips tolerate very little pressure, and a blocked breather will push oil past a perfectly good seal. Shaft was ground with a lead from the grinding wheel — Re-grind by plunge grinding with no lead. A shaft machining lead acts like a screw thread and pumps oil out from under the lip regardless of seal quality. Where two of those apply at once, specify for the harsher of the two — under-specifying is what puts the part back on the bench a month later. Send us the duty and we will confirm the execution.

Ordering this from SES.

Smear the lip with the same oil the machine runs on before fitting, never with grease if the sump is oil-filled. A dry start burns a hard band into the lip within the first minute and it never seals properly afterwards.
