Seals for Heavy Industrial Applications
Large-diameter, heavy-section radial shaft seals for mill, kiln, press and marine duty. Thicker cross sections, stronger lip support and split executions handle the run-out and shaft movement that standard seals cannot. SES holds the range as an authorised SKF distributor, covering diameter capability Up to around 4 000 mm using large-diameter designs; cross sections Heavy standard, plus low cross section for tight radial space; materials NBR, HNBR, FKM, and abrasion-resistant compounds; constructions Solid moulded, joined profile, split with vulcanised ends. Executions include HDS heavy-duty large-diameter seals, split executions, low cross section designs, SKF flex seals built from profile, among others. It is specified most often into rolling mill roll neck and chock arrangements and ball and SAG mill trunnion bearings. Every part is genuine SKF through official channels, with designation, specification and options confirmed against your duty before it ships — supplied from Kolkata and our branch network, with breakdown cover that does not sit in an inbox.

Where it runs.
You will find Seals for Heavy Industrial Applications in the parts of a plant where this particular duty actually occurs. In practice that means rolling mill roll neck and chock arrangements, ball and SAG mill trunnion bearings, kiln support roller and thrust roller shafts, and equally large forging and extrusion press column bushings, marine stern tube and deck machinery shafts, winder and hoist drum shaft ends in mining. What links them is the duty rather than the machine name — shaft range: Large — hundreds of mm up to several metres. If your installation is not on that list it matters less than you would think: the operating condition decides the specification. Send us the load, the speed, the running temperature and the environment it runs in, and we will match it to the right execution in the SKF range and confirm what is in stock.
Specify it against the duty.
Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. Shaft cannot be withdrawn and the coupling cannot be pulled — A split seal with a matched split housing. Every hour saved on dismantling a mill trunnion is worth more than the price difference on the seal. Dynamic run-out is large because the shaft is long and overhung — A heavy-section design with a longer flex band between case and lip. A short, stiff lip section loses contact on the light side of each revolution. Emulsion, descaling water or hot mill scale reaches the shaft entry — A multi-lip arrangement with a flushed or purged cavity between lips. Relying on one lip in a mill spray zone means changing it every outage. Where two of those apply at once, specify for the harsher of the two — under-specifying is what puts the part back on the bench a month later. Send us the duty and we will confirm the execution.

Ordering this from SES.
On large diameters the seal must be supported all round while it is drawn into the bore, or it goes in oval and the lip loses contact at the two flat spots. Use a full-face fitting ring, not a hammer and a block of wood.
