Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. The old seal position has been bored oversize during a repair — A shallower section seal in a step sleeve rather than a thicker seal. Filling a repaired bore with a heavy-section seal usually leaves too little wall thickness in the housing. Radial section is small but the shaft still deflects — A profile with a longer membrane between case and lip. A short membrane in a shallow section runs out of travel and the lip lifts off. Housing wall is thin and the press fit may relax when hot — A clamped carrier plate instead of relying on interference alone. A shallow case has little grip to lose before it starts turning in the bore. A shallow case distorts far more easily than a standard one. Check the fitted seal for ovality with a feeler gauge at four points before the cover goes back on, because you will not get another chance once the shaft is in.
