A vertical pump shaft carries the impeller hydraulic thrust plus the shaft weight — This bearing sized on combined thrust, with the radial component checked separately. Radial load beyond roughly half the axial value unloads part of the roller set. The pump can run at reduced flow or off its design point — Verify the thrust never falls below the minimum load figure. An unloaded spherical roller thrust bearing skids badly, and the smearing it produces is unmistakable on strip-down. The bearing runs continuously at speed with a heavy load — Oil circulation with cooling, not grease. Heat generated at a steep contact angle has nowhere to go through a grease pack, and the cage suffers first. Fill the bearing with oil before the first start, not just the sump. On a vertical shaft the rollers sit above the static oil level, and a dry first minute at full thrust does more damage than the next six months of running.
