Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. Chain climbs the teeth and jumps under load — Replace sprocket and chain as a pair. Hooked teeth pull a new chain into the same wear pattern inside a week. Driver has fewer than about 17 teeth — Either accept the chordal action or move up in tooth count. Small sprockets make the chain surge, and that surge shows up as gearbox noise and rapid pin wear. Abrasive dust duty such as coal, clinker or sinter — Hardened teeth inside an enclosed guard. Plain teeth wear to a hook in a single season. Where two of those apply at once, specify for the harsher of the two — under-specifying is what puts the part back on the bench a month later.
