Tapered Roller Bearings
Tapered rollers run between tapered raceways whose extended surfaces meet at a common point on the shaft axis, so the rollers roll true instead of skidding. The group runs from a single separable row that the fitter adjusts on assembly, up to a preset four-row block for a mill roll neck. SES holds the range as an authorised SKF distributor, covering bore range About 15 mm to over 1500 mm across the group; dimension systems Metric to ISO 355 and inch to ANSI/ABMA; contact angle Roughly 10 to 30 degrees; steeper angles carry more thrust; cages Pressed steel, machined brass or polymer, depending on series. Executions include single row tapered roller bearings, matched tapered roller bearings, double row tapered roller bearings, four-row tapered roller bearings. It is specified most often into pinion and output shafts in bevel-helical conveyor drives and kiln and cooler trunnion and drive pinion housings. Every part is genuine SKF through official channels, with designation, specification and options confirmed against your duty before it ships — supplied from Kolkata and our branch network, with breakdown cover that does not sit in an inbox.

Where it runs.
You will find Tapered Roller Bearings in the parts of a plant where this particular duty actually occurs. In practice that means pinion and output shafts in bevel-helical conveyor drives, kiln and cooler trunnion and drive pinion housings, wheel and axle bearings on wagon tipplers and transfer cars, and equally crusher eccentric bushes and main shafts, rolling mill roll necks and screw-down assemblies, fan and blower shafts carrying belt pull plus duct thrust. What links them is the duty rather than the machine name — load: Combined radial + axial, one direction per row. If your installation is not on that list it matters less than you would think: the operating condition decides the specification. Send us the load, the speed, the running temperature and the environment it runs in, and we will match it to the right execution in the SKF range and confirm what is in stock.
Specify it against the duty.
Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. Two bearing positions on one shaft can be adjusted against each other during assembly — Plain single row bearings, with the end float set on the bench. Adjust too tight and there is no room for thermal growth; the small end of the roller then skids and smears within days. The machine is built by production staff with no bearing setting skill — A matched set or a double row with the clearance already preset at the works, so the fitter only clamps against a shoulder and cannot get the setting wrong. Heavy radial load with thrust reversing in both directions, inside a short housing — A double row execution. Two separate single rows spread over a longer housing will fret their seatings and the bore will pick up in service. Where two of those apply at once, specify for the harsher of the two — under-specifying is what puts the part back on the bench a month later. Send us the duty and we will confirm the execution.

Ordering this from SES.
A tapered roller bearing must never be run at zero clearance by accident. Set a measurable cold end float, then check it again once the machine has been at running temperature for a couple of hours — a shaft that grows faster than its housing will swallow that float in the first hour of a hot campaign.
