Tapered Roller Thrust Bearings

Tapered rollers running between coned washers, arranged so the load line is almost axial. The tapered geometry gives true rolling across the washer face, which lets it carry heavier thrust than a flat cylindrical set at the same size. SES holds the range as an authorised SKF distributor, covering bore range About 30 mm to 800 mm; direction Single direction standard; double direction available; washers Coned shaft and housing washers; cage Machined or pressed, matched to roller taper. Executions include single direction executions, double direction executions, screw-down executions for rolling mill service, executions with a sphered seating washer, among others. It is specified most often into screw-down assemblies on plate and section mills and crane hook and swivel thrust positions. Every part is genuine SKF through official channels, with designation, specification and options confirmed against your duty before it ships — supplied from Kolkata and our branch network, with breakdown cover that does not sit in an inbox.

Where it runs.

You will find Tapered Roller Thrust Bearings in the parts of a plant where this particular duty actually occurs. In practice that means screw-down assemblies on plate and section mills, crane hook and swivel thrust positions, press ram and forging hammer thrust points, and equally marine and dredger deck machinery thrust ends, heavy vertical shaft supports in mineral processing, extruder and pelletiser thrust stages. What links them is the duty rather than the machine name — load: Very heavy axial, one direction. If your installation is not on that list it matters less than you would think: the operating condition decides the specification. Send us the load, the speed, the running temperature and the environment it runs in, and we will match it to the right execution in the SKF range and confirm what is in stock.

Specify it against the duty.

Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. Thrust is very high and the space envelope will not take a larger flat set — The tapered thrust design, which puts more capacity in the same diameter. Substituting a flat washer set to save cost simply moves the failure to the roller ends. The load reverses, even briefly, during unloading — A double direction execution or an opposed pair. A single set unloading fully lets the rollers lift and skew, and they come back into load at an angle. Duty is a slow screw with long stationary periods under full load — A grease with a high load-carrying additive package, and rotate the screw periodically. Standing loaded in one position is how these washers pick up true brinelling. Where two of those apply at once, specify for the harsher of the two — under-specifying is what puts the part back on the bench a month later. Send us the duty and we will confirm the execution.

Ordering this from SES.

Keep a minimum thrust on the bearing even when the machine is nominally unloaded — a spring pack or the weight of the assembly is enough. A tapered thrust set that is allowed to go completely slack rattles, and the rollers arrive back in the load zone skewed.
