Thin Section Bearings

Thin section bearings hold the same cross section as the bore grows, so a 500 mm bore bearing can have the same section as a 100 mm one. You buy them when the design has plenty of diameter, no room radially or axially, and a weight target to meet. SES holds the range as an authorised SKF distributor, covering bore range From about 25 mm to over 1000 mm; cross sections Several fixed sections, from very small upward; contact types Radial contact, angular contact, four-point contact; series Inch (Reali-Slim) and metric (BB). Executions include thin section bearing types, Reali-Slim thin section bearings, Reali-Slim TT turntable thin section bearings, BB series metric thin section ball bearings, among others. It is specified most often into robot and manipulator joint axes and medical and industrial imaging gantries. Every part is genuine SKF through official channels, with designation, specification and options confirmed against your duty before it ships — supplied from Kolkata and our branch network, with breakdown cover that does not sit in an inbox.

You will find Thin Section Bearings in the parts of a plant where this particular duty actually occurs. In practice that means robot and manipulator joint axes, medical and industrial imaging gantries, optical, radar and antenna positioners, and equally semiconductor and flat panel handling equipment, index and rotary tables on light assembly lines, packaging and printing machine rotary heads. What links them is the duty rather than the machine name — cross section: Constant, independent of bore. If your installation is not on that list it matters less than you would think: the operating condition decides the specification. Send us the load, the speed, the running temperature and the environment it runs in, and we will match it to the right execution in the SKF range and confirm what is in stock.

Specify it against the duty.

Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. The load is a tilting moment about the bearing axis — Four-point contact on a single bearing, or two angular contact bearings spread apart. A radial contact type has almost no moment capacity at all. Only axial thrust is present, and in one direction — Angular contact, mounted so the contact line runs the right way. Fitted the wrong way round it drives the thrust across the shoulder and the raceway spalls. Shaft and housing are aluminium — Fits calculated at operating temperature. A thin section ring conforms to whatever it is pressed into, so housing error goes straight into the raceway. Where two of those apply at once, specify for the harsher of the two — under-specifying is what puts the part back on the bench a month later. Send us the duty and we will confirm the execution.

Ordering this from SES.

Call out housing and shaft roundness as tightly as the bearing tolerance itself. A thin section ring has no stiffness of its own to resist a lobed housing, so whatever shape you press it into is the shape the raceway takes.
