Transmission Shaft Seals
These seal the input and output shafts of manual, automatic and powershift gearboxes. They cope with oil churn, case pressure and a shaft that spins at engine speed with the vehicle standing still. SES holds the range as an authorised SKF distributor, covering position Gearbox shaft exits through the casing; lip design Spring-loaded, with or without hydrodynamic ribs; materials NBR, HNBR, FKM, PTFE; media Manual gear oil, ATF, synthetic lubricants. Executions include input shaft seals, output and tail housing seals, hydrodynamic rib executions, PTFE-lipped high-speed seals, among others. It is specified most often into manual gearbox input and output shafts on trucks and automatic transmission tail housings. Every part is genuine SKF through official channels, with designation, specification and options confirmed against your duty before it ships — supplied from Kolkata and our branch network, with breakdown cover that does not sit in an inbox.

Where it runs.
You will find Transmission Shaft Seals in the parts of a plant where this particular duty actually occurs. In practice that means manual gearbox input and output shafts on trucks, automatic transmission tail housings, transfer case output shafts on all-wheel drive plant, and equally powershift transmissions on loaders, tractor gearbox and PTO shaft exits, industrial gear unit input shafts on drive skids. What links them is the duty rather than the machine name — position: Gearbox input, output and transfer shafts. If your installation is not on that list it matters less than you would think: the operating condition decides the specification. Send us the load, the speed, the running temperature and the environment it runs in, and we will match it to the right execution in the SKF range and confirm what is in stock.
Specify it against the duty.
Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. The shaft runs at engine speed at the gearbox input — A seal rated for that surface speed, with a PTFE lip if it is marginal. An elastomer lip run over its speed limit glazes and then hardens. Fluid is ATF rather than gear oil — The correct compound for ATF. Its additive package attacks some nitrile grades and the lip cracks radially rather than wearing. The gearbox is above the axle and oil drains away when standing — A seal with a hydrodynamic return feature, correctly handed for the direction of rotation. Wrong handing pumps oil out instead of back. Where two of those apply at once, specify for the harsher of the two — under-specifying is what puts the part back on the bench a month later. Send us the duty and we will confirm the execution.

Ordering this from SES.
Hydrodynamic seals are directional. If a gearbox is used in both directions of rotation, specify a plain lip instead — a handed seal running backwards will empty the case faster than no seal at all. Send the designation off the failed part and we will confirm the SKF equivalent and stock position.
