You will find Two-bearing Housings in the parts of a plant where this particular duty actually occurs. In practice that means countershaft and jackshaft assemblies in drive trains, belt tensioner and snub roller assemblies, short intermediate shafts between gearbox and drum, and equally fan drive jackshafts in power plant, textile and jute machinery intermediate drives. Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. Two separate plummer blocks keep losing alignment on a short shaft — A two-bearing housing. On short centres the alignment tolerance is a fraction of what two independent blocks can hold on a fabricated base. Assembly has to be removable as a unit — The two-bearing housing with dowelled mounting, so it goes back in the same place. Otherwise you realign the drive every time it comes out. Shaft expands between the two bores — One bore located and the other free. In a rigid single casting there is nowhere for the growth to go and it becomes bearing preload directly.
