Valve Stem Seals
A small lipped seal that sits over the top of the valve guide and meters the oil film reaching the valve stem. It must pass enough oil to stop the stem scuffing in the guide, and not a drop more. SES holds the range as an authorised SKF distributor, covering lip materials FKM, ACM, PTFE-faced; continuous temperature To about 150 °C for FKM lips; spring Stainless steel garter spring on most executions; body Steel or brass insert with moulded lip. Executions include umbrella (deflector) type, positive guide-mounted type, integrated valve spring seat type, FKM lipped, among others. It is specified most often into DG set diesel engines on plant standby duty and tipper and dumper engines in quarry and mine fleets. Every part is genuine SKF through official channels, with designation, specification and options confirmed against your duty before it ships — supplied from Kolkata and our branch network, with breakdown cover that does not sit in an inbox.

Where it runs.
You will find Valve Stem Seals in the parts of a plant where this particular duty actually occurs. In practice that means DG set diesel engines on plant standby duty, tipper and dumper engines in quarry and mine fleets, agricultural pump set and tractor engines, and equally forklift and yard shunter engines in works transport, rail and marine auxiliary diesel heads at overhaul, petrol engine head reconditioning in workshop rebuilds. What links them is the duty rather than the machine name — function: Meters oil down the valve stem. If your installation is not on that list it matters less than you would think: the operating condition decides the specification. Send us the load, the speed, the running temperature and the environment it runs in, and we will match it to the right execution in the SKF range and confirm what is in stock.
Specify it against the duty.
Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. Turbocharged diesel running high crankcase pressure — An FKM lip with a stainless garter spring. A plain nitrile lip relaxes at head temperature and the engine starts drinking oil again within a few thousand hours. Head has been reconditioned and the guides reamed or renewed — Every seal in the head, matched to the new guide boss diameter. A seal that is slack on a reamed guide lifts off its seat and pumps oil into the port. Engine spends long periods idling, as standby sets do — A positive guide-mounted seal instead of an umbrella type, because umbrella seals rely on stem movement to shed oil and barely work at idle. Where two of those apply at once, specify for the harsher of the two — under-specifying is what puts the part back on the bench a month later. Send us the duty and we will confirm the execution.

Ordering this from SES.
Slide the plastic sleeve over the collet groove before pushing the seal down. That groove edge will slit the lip, and a slit lip only announces itself once the engine has run and started smoking. Send the designation off the failed part and we will confirm the SKF equivalent and stock position.
