The rod picks up an oil film that collects dust — A double-lip wiper, so the inner lip returns the film rather than letting it dry into a grinding paste on the rod. Cylinder works below freezing or through ice build-up — A wiper compound that stays flexible cold. A wiper that goes hard at low temperature stops wiping and starts polishing. The gland groove is open on the outside face — A snap-in wiper with a retaining bead. A press-fit type in an open groove can be pushed out on the return stroke and disappear.
