Face Grinding

Grinding with the face of a cup, dish or segmented wheel instead of its periphery. The contact area is large, so stock comes off quickly — and so does heat build up in the workpiece. SES holds the range as an authorised Tyrolit distributor, covering forms Cup wheels, dish wheels, cylinder wheels, segments; mounting Threaded, plain bore, or segment holder plates; abrasives Aluminium oxide, zirconia alumina, silicon carbide; bonds Vitrified and resinoid. Executions include straight cup wheels, flaring cup wheels, dish wheels, cylinder wheels, among others. It is specified most often into facing large castings and weldments before machining and grinding clutch and brake friction faces. Every part is genuine Tyrolit through official channels, with designation, specification and options confirmed against your duty before it ships — supplied from Kolkata and our branch network, with breakdown cover that does not sit in an inbox.

Where it runs.

You will find Face Grinding in the parts of a plant where this particular duty actually occurs. In practice that means facing large castings and weldments before machining, grinding clutch and brake friction faces, flattening die blocks and bolsters in the press shop, and equally billet and slab face conditioning in the foundry, refacing valve seats and flange faces, sharpening broaches and flat form tools. What links them is the duty rather than the machine name — contact: Wheel face, large arc. If your installation is not on that list it matters less than you would think: the operating condition decides the specification. Send us the load, the speed, the running temperature and the environment it runs in, and we will match it to the right execution in the Tyrolit range and confirm what is in stock.

Specify it against the duty.

Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. Large ground area on a rotary-table machine — Segments rather than a solid ring. The gaps clear swarf and carry coolant in; a solid wheel on the same duty traps heat under the face. Cast iron and non-ferrous work — Silicon carbide in an open structure. Aluminium oxide loads with soft swarf and then rubs the face bright. Rehardening burn appearing beneath the ground face — A softer grade so the wheel self-sharpens, with coolant aimed inside the cup rather than at its outside diameter. Where two of those apply at once, specify for the harsher of the two — under-specifying is what puts the part back on the bench a month later. Send us the duty and we will confirm the execution.

Ordering this from SES.

On segmented heads, change the whole set together and check the seating of every block. One short segment carries no load, its neighbours carry it instead, and the head is out of balance within an hour of running.
