Fettling
Everything used to clean a casting once it leaves the mould: cutting off risers and gates, grinding parting lines and pads, and dressing surfaces back to drawing. Fettling wheels work under far higher pressure than general grinding wheels, and their bonds are formulated for exactly that. SES holds the range as an authorised Tyrolit distributor, covering wheel diameters 100 mm to 900 mm by machine; grain Zirconia alumina, aluminium oxide, silicon carbide, ceramic; bond Resinoid, glass fibre reinforced; speeds 50, 63 and 80 m/s grades. Executions include automatic fettling, cutting of cast materials, free hand grinding, pedestal and reciprocating grinding. It is specified most often into riser and gate removal in ferrous foundries and parting line dressing on moulded castings. Every part is genuine Tyrolit through official channels, with designation, specification and options confirmed against your duty before it ships — supplied from Kolkata and our branch network, with breakdown cover that does not sit in an inbox.

Where it runs.
You will find Fettling in the parts of a plant where this particular duty actually occurs. In practice that means riser and gate removal in ferrous foundries, parting line dressing on moulded castings, grinding weld repairs on cast steel components, and equally cleaning ingot and billet surface defects in steel plants, dressing rolls and mill housings in repair shops, preparing castings for machining and inspection. What links them is the duty rather than the machine name — work: Cast iron, cast steel, alloy castings. If your installation is not on that list it matters less than you would think: the operating condition decides the specification. Send us the load, the speed, the running temperature and the environment it runs in, and we will match it to the right execution in the Tyrolit range and confirm what is in stock.
Specify it against the duty.
Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. The casting is small enough to be carried to the machine — Pedestal or reciprocating grinding. Taking a portable grinder to a small casting wastes more time in handling than in cutting. The casting is too heavy to move — Pendulum or swing-frame grinding, with the wheel brought to the work. This is where free hand grinding wheels with high-strength bonds belong. Volumes are high and the geometry repeats — An automatic fettling cell with wheels formulated for constant pressure. Manual grades wear unpredictably and the cell offsets drift. Where two of those apply at once, specify for the harsher of the two — under-specifying is what puts the part back on the bench a month later. Send us the duty and we will confirm the execution.

Ordering this from SES.
Cost per casting, not cost per wheel, is the only figure worth tracking in a fettling bay. A wheel at twice the price that removes three times the metal is the cheaper wheel, and the store ledger will never show it.
