Stock removal is the whole point and finish does not matter — A coarse zirconia or ceramic wheel at the highest speed rating the machine carries. Removal rate rises sharply with peripheral speed, so a 63 m/s wheel on an 80 m/s machine is wasted capacity. Operators are complaining of vibration and fatigue — A free-cutting, even structure and a check on machine balance. Grinding fatigue usually begins with a wheel that has to be forced. Castings are alloy or heat-resistant steel — Ceramic grain. Alloy steels push heat back into the wheel face, and ordinary grain dulls before it fractures.
