Gear Honing
A hard-finishing process that runs an internally toothed honing ring in mesh with the gear. Very little metal comes off, but the flank surface is cleaned up and transmission noise falls with it. SES holds the range as an authorised Tyrolit distributor, covering tool form Internally toothed ring, gear shaped; abrasives Aluminium oxide, ceramic grain, CBN, diamond; bonds Vitrified and plated; stock removed Typically a few microns per flank. Executions include vitrified dressable honing rings, plated honing rings, ceramic-grain honing rings, CBN honing rings, among others. It is specified most often into passenger vehicle transmission gears where noise is a warranty issue and electric vehicle reduction gears with no engine noise to mask them. Every part is genuine Tyrolit through official channels, with designation, specification and options confirmed against your duty before it ships — supplied from Kolkata and our branch network, with breakdown cover that does not sit in an inbox.

Where it runs.
You will find Gear Honing in the parts of a plant where this particular duty actually occurs. In practice that means passenger vehicle transmission gears where noise is a warranty issue, electric vehicle reduction gears with no engine noise to mask them, machine tool headstock gearing, and equally pump and compressor timing gears, precision indexing drives, small industrial gearbox pinions in volume. What links them is the duty rather than the machine name — action: Meshed, crossed-axis, low stock. If your installation is not on that list it matters less than you would think: the operating condition decides the specification. Send us the load, the speed, the running temperature and the environment it runs in, and we will match it to the right execution in the Tyrolit range and confirm what is in stock.
Specify it against the duty.
Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. Noise complaint on a gear whose geometry already passes — Honing rather than further grinding. The fault is flank texture and grinding lay, not profile error. More than a few microns of stock left after grinding — A correction to the grinding operation first. A honing ring asked to remove real stock wears out of profile and stops correcting anything. Several gear geometries running on one machine — Dressable vitrified honing rings trued on the machine with a diamond dressing gear, instead of plated rings tied to a single geometry. Where two of those apply at once, specify for the harsher of the two — under-specifying is what puts the part back on the bench a month later. Send us the duty and we will confirm the execution.

Ordering this from SES.
Keep a used ring and its dressing record filed with the gear drawing. When the noise complaint returns six months later, the ring wear history tells you far more than a fresh inspection report will. Send the designation off the failed part and we will confirm the Tyrolit equivalent and stock position.
