Specification here follows the operating condition, not the catalogue. Hardened or high-alloy bar is being cut dry — A wheel with an open structure and free-cutting grain. A dense wheel holds heat in the kerf, and the bar work-hardens ahead of the cut. The machine is a wet cut-off with flood coolant — A wheel rated for wet use. A dry-rated resin wheel run in coolant softens unevenly and the wheel goes out of balance. Long production runs of the same section — The largest diameter the machine will accept within its speed rating. A larger wheel spreads the same wear over more circumference and holds size for longer. Balance matters far more on a stationary machine than on a hand grinder. If a large wheel starts to hammer near the end of a cut, check spindle bearings and flange faces before blaming the wheel, because a machine that runs out will destroy every wheel you fit to it.
