Carbon steel filaments embed iron particles that flash-rust and start pitting under the paint film. Heavy mill scale or hard weld slag — Knotted filaments in the taper. Crimped wire lies over on hard scale and polishes it instead of breaking it away. Thin sheet or soft alloy — Fine crimped wire at reduced speed. A knotted brush on thin sheet gouges the surface and leaves a scalloped profile that every coat of paint will show.
